Charlie and I did the spectacular-but-snowy hike up to Hyalite Lake yesterday

Charlie and I did the spectacular-but-snowy hike up to Hyalite Lake yesterday ... a gorgeous trip. Outside of Glacier, at least, for my money this is the best day hike in Montana.

Here's the first batch of photos -- shots of the trail, and of the lake itself, which is one of the most gorgeous spots you'll ever see. The hike is mostly known for its waterfalls, though, and with the high runoff this year they were amazing. I'll post some shots of those next.

  1. Another one to add to our list of Montana hikes when we go....someday. Thanks for sharing!

  2. My brain gets the whole "snow in some places but not in others" idea, but somewhere there's a part of me going "snow... July... WTF?" :)

  3. Joseph, It has been an especially cold year in the Northwest. I went to get road conditions for a trip to Rainier and the ranger said that in a normal year, an area of Rainier called "Paradise" (because it is) has about 9 inches of snow on this day in July, but today it has 96 inches! It's hard to believe if you come from the east or south, but at least in Western, WA, we're in a relative deep freeze!

  4. I'm even worse because I live in southern CA now and haven't had snow (except in case of travel) in years ! :)

  5. It is especially unseasonable here, which adds to the conflict. I took a pic of Mt. Rainier at a place called Tipsoo Lake. At 8:30pm, it was 40 degrees outside. In case you want to go where the weather is cool, I've geotagged the photo ;-) so you can find the exact spot! Snow AND cold, a partially frozen lake, the whole nine yards!

  6. Good God. It is 90 degrees here today.

  7. It's 90 degrees here in town today, too! And I'm sure it was in the 70s up at the lake yesterday. Once the snow's packed down for the winter, it melts pretty slowly.

And yeah ... most of western Montana got roughly twice as much snow last winter as normal. Spring was late and there was lots of flooding, and some of the high country is still drifted in. It's made for spectacular views, though, and it's also made me appreciate summer all the more!

As far as hiking companions go, Charlie is the best there is. He's so utterly happy out there ... makes my heart soar.

  9. It was a really wonderful day ... and Charlie has become one of the world's greatest hiking dogs! There's nothing he loves more ...
