For me, the most interesting statement in this article was that Facebook had a total of 157 million visitors in May. Given that the total number of FB accounts is now supposedly somewhere around 750 million, that means that roughly four-fifths of all Facebook accounts have been at least semi-abandoned by their creators.

  2. Your "supposedly" speaks to my contention that FB has nowhere anywhere near 750 million users, and while not a 100% lie they're pushing about that number, quite obviously at best it's the total number of accounts created since Zuckerberg left the dorms.

  3. Ron Guerin -- yep, exactly. And the other thing to remember about the usage numbers is that, in the US, at least, they're going down rather than up. Facebook's day in the sun has passed.

  4. Well I'm doing my part to pad Facebook 750m statistics. I have my Teresa acct, my Darla (dog) acct and two dummy accounts for testing....wonder how many are like me....

  5. Teresa Atkinson -- Yeah, probably a few ... but I'd guess that most of the dormant accounts are people who got peer-pressured into joining Facebook, but never got used to the notion of using it. I'd guess that probably 2/3 of my Facebook "friends" fall into that category.

(I've considered setting up a FB profile for my dog before, but decided against it after I was Facebook-defriended by a cat one day!)

  6. I dunno. I think if Google+ takes off, it will drive me off social networking sites altogether.

They're far too fleeting to be worth investing time into, apparently.

Two myspace accounts now abandoned in favor of Facebook are enough wasted effort.

  8. chris haertel -- There's nothing we can do about it ... it's just the nature of humankind, especially when we're connected to the Internet. Our attention spans are short, and they keep getting shorter, because there are more shiny things out there every single day.

Teresa Atkinson -- Hey, that's the way cats are ... and that's why I'm a dog person. :)
