I'm dating myself, here

I'm dating myself, here ... but as far as tech magazines go my favorite was definitely Byte. I was very sad when it was killed off, and I don't think there's anything out there now that compares.

Anyhow, now it turns out that Byte has been reincarnated ... at least of sorts, in online form. Jerry Pournelle is even back! So far it looks pretty good, but we'll see.

  1. Maybe I missed something, I thought Byte went straight to the on-line version when the print was killed off. I haven't looked in years though ...

  2. Yeah, they had an earlier online-only version for a while, but it wasn't very useful and I barely looked at it. And then I think they pissed off Pournelle at some point and he left ... and then they shut the whole thing down.

  3. At first I thought you were actually dating yourself...and so I thought, poor Mark, can't get a date so he has to date himself.... Well I'm dating myself, because I didn't know that Byte magazine went away....and besides, who reads printed magazines anymore?

  4. Sigh, Mark, you're making me go all nostalgic for 1989, fighting my way through a Byte article on jump switch settings for various VGA boards (256 colours, maaaan!) on my Compaq 386/33.

  5. I'm glad I'm not the only one who sent comforting thoughts to Mark's love life at first read.

And I suppose I'm dating myself here, too, by having never heard of this magazine...

  6. Theodore Stauffer -- It was all downhill after that, wasn't it?

  7. ... and we're all adults here, so I'm sure we all "date" ourselves from time to time. :-p

  8. Mark Hufstetler, yeah, pretty much. I often get the feeling that the more opportunity people have, the less creative they are. This dude agrees with me: http://vimeo.com/26260584

  9. Hank Jones -- I guess that's what happens when you get too old. :-p

  10. A byte is what we leave the false teeth clinging to, isn't it?
