This is what gave me an urge to visit Kerguelen Island ... it's the only land antipode to any part of Montana.

I'd be right off Madagascar. Where would you be?
I'd be SW of Australia.
ReplyDeleteApparently that tiny piece of northern Montana is the only part of the 48 contiguous US states that has a land-based antipode! Who would have guessed?
ReplyDelete("Or cared," I hear some of you saying ... )
Pacific ocean south of New Zealand. Oddly enough almost exactly on the International date line. How could that be? Oh yes, Greenwich Meridian. I keep forgetting that most of the world used to be ours. I miss the "pink bits" on the maps of my youth...
ReplyDeleteTim Lloyd -- "Used to be" being the operative phrase there. :-p
ReplyDeleteOff topic, but I read a book a few years ago called "The Last Pink Bits," about the remote little corners of the world that still remain British colonies. It was a fun read, and guaranteed to inspire wanderlust.
Mark Hufstetler We do have some odd outposts, that's for sure.
ReplyDeleteI'd be in Paraguay South America. LOL! Fun tool. Wonder if it's accurate.
ReplyDeleteYeah, from the looks of it I'd say it was accurate ... it matched what I'd read earlier about Montana's antipode, at least.
ReplyDeleteAnd David, at least you hit a land mass! I went to Paraguay a few years ago, and it was actually kind of interesting ...
I don't know where I'd land up and I'm not interested either, but God, would I give a (virtual) arm and a leg to visit the Kerguellen islands.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I'm pretty sure it would be my kind of place!
ReplyDeleteWindy as all hell, apparently, but from the images I've seen, it looks very serene. Also, there's some French guys who run the place, so there'd be wine and decent food.
ReplyDeleteEdit: I just tried out the map thing. In Switzerland I would land up in the Pacific a few thousand km's off New Zealand and in South Africa I'd land up north of Hawai...
ReplyDeleteIt looks like it's possible to visit Kerguelen as a tourist on the supply vessel that travels to the place every couple of months.I bet it would be amazing!
ReplyDeleteNow all I need is a trust fund ...
Well, I trust you, but my funds are limited.
ReplyDeleteMark, you should have drilled through. You could have come to Taipei! :) LOL!
