There are things I like about FB but that encapsulates all the things I don't like really well. I hate seeing people replace real-life interactions with virtual ones. Augment, yes - replace, no.
Yeah, that's a big part of my issue with Facebook, as well. But it's not just the virtual nature of the conversation, its that FB seems to work to demean the level of the conversation. Everything there is dumbed down, and most of it has an ulterior motive ... and that really bothers me.
Frankly, the guy in the video seems like a tool. I haven't found my FB interactions to have an ulterior motive for the most part. Mostly it's like small talk taken to the internet. The biggest difference I can see between + and FB is Google has the opportunity to learn from FB's mistakes. E. g., providing an "edit" feature so I could get rid "generally" and "in my experience" to tighten up this reply!
Personally, I have nothing against Facebook. It's helped me find people I haven't seen for 30 years. I only look at it every few days anyway. It may be banal, what with all the "I drank coffee this morning" posts, but that's ok by me. Life is banal.
@Theo: Yeah, that's how I felt about Facebook two or three years ago ... but now all the old friends have been found, and hardly any of them turned back into "real" friendships again, and anyway most of them now lurk on FB rather than post. But the "noise" level there keeps increasing.
@Neil: Oh, the guy in that video is almost certainly a tool IRL. But I still pretty much agree with the points he made there ...
I'm pretty sure that no one I know is still here, but I thought I'd make a last post anyway, just for the heck of it. I'm sorry you didn't make it, Google Plus. Sleep well.

ReplyDeleteTouché. :)
ReplyDeleteI think that dumb "like" icon is about my least favorite part of the Facebook interface.
ReplyDeleteSo thank gawd for the +1 button .......

Mak that is absurd. This place is perfectly suited for meaningless internet interactions. (Like this one)
